In 2014, Nike declared March 26th as Air Max Day, creating the Nike Air Max 1 "Air Max Day/3.26" colorway of the iconic running shoe. Inspired by the Pompidou Center in Paris, known for its "inside-out" design, Tinker Hatfield made Air cushioning visible on the Air Max in 1987, despite initial resistance from Nike's marketing side. This innovation led to one of the most significant sneaker technologies ever made. The original white, grey, and red colorway of the Air Max 1, influenced by Tinker’s experiences in Paris, debuted in 1987. On Air Max Day 2014, the original colorway was reimagined with a yellow midsole and a distinctive tongue underside. The official colorway of the 3.26 Air Max 1 is Sail/University Red-Natural Grey, marking its release alongside the announcement of Air Max Day, featuring the date prominently displayed on the tongue and Neon Nike logos stitched into special insoles. While retail versions came in standard packaging, a limited number of promotional pairs were presented in unique "Air" packaging. Nike also celebrated the release with Air Max Day apparel and a vigorous social media campaign.
