The Nike Air Max 97 sneaker was a big hit in Italy when it was first released. Nike decided to thank the Italians who helped make the AM97 so popular by creating a special Nike Air Max 97 Metallic Gold two decades later. This Air Max 97 included various shades of metallic gold on the upper part of the sneaker, which was made out of leather and textile. It also had red embroidered Swooshes on the sides and a Max Air sole unit that spanned the length of the sneaker. But what set this Air Max 97 apart from others and what we loved most about this sneaker were the Italian flags that were worked into the mix. The flag was prominently featured on both the tongue tab and the heel tab of the sneaker. The Nike Air Max 97 Metallic Gold was released on January 18, 2018 for a retail price of $160. Soon after it was first released, the Air Max 97 became a staple of Italian street style. The silhouette was so ubiquitous throughout the country that Nike even partnered with Italian design agency KALEIDOSCOPE to commission a 2017 book—Le Silver—documenting the oral history of the sneaker in 90s Milan. As a tribute to the country, Nike dropped the ‘Italy Gold’ colorway in early 2018, combining a gold upper with the colors of the Italian flag on the tongue and heel pull tab.
